What is Michael Jackson and Bob Fosse!

What is this recurring character, the Dapper Dan with his top hat, those notorious spat covered dance shoes and the timeless tuxedo? Is that Micheal Jackson reincarnated? The truth of the matter is that Michael Jackson, though respectfully the King of Pop was not the original, not the king of the style for which he became best known. He was not the king of those moves we all coveted and tried imitating, rather he was  the “joker” that made the style famous. The true king was Bob Fosse, the legendary jazz dancer and Broadway choreographer.  Michael Jackson borrowed Fosse’s style and moves, gave them a pop culture back drop and brought them to the unsuspecting masses.  I guess it is not he who starts the race first, but he who finishes with the prize, the Grammy’s, the accolade, the recognition that we remember most. To all the youngsters out there who fight to be first up, strive to be the 1 remembered! Much praise to Michael for recognizing Fosse’s talent and not being afraid to cop it and reinvent it as his own. It goes without saying, “there is nothing new under the sun!” Continue reading ‘What is Michael Jackson and Bob Fosse!’

What is a “Fake Empire”! … We’re half awake!

A few weeks ago, I received this video in my comment box along with a very brief  explanation that simply said, “You should blog this video,” from some guy by the name of Ryan Lewis.  That’s it.  No other explanation at all and no I don’t know who Ryan Lewis is.  Of course, at this point, however, my interest had been piqued and I was soon deep into his mini film.  Upon first view, I’ll admit I didn’t know what to think of Ryan’s production, only that he made some really good use of some beautiful stop motion photography and I sensed that he was attempting convey some profound message. I just didn’t know what it was.  At any length, I was further intrigued to perform due diligence on this cat and found that Ryan Lewis is actually a very talented, versatile and well rounded artist which is what persuaded me to honor the request and “blog this video”.  You see, Ryan Lewis is , not only,  a very skilled and creative photographer, but he’s also an audio producer… he makes beats, designs album covers and promotional fliers for artist as well… my kinda cat!!

I viewed his video for a second time on Thanksgiving morning, I awoke to my usual morning of getting straight to business- logging onto my laptop and grabbing my mobile, simultaneously.  It was time to clock in- log onto my blog, check my email,  glance through my text messages etc, get my day going with a cup of freshly brewed organically grown fair trade java and a whole world brought to me via cyberspace. After viewing, Ryan’s video, while, responding to more than a dozen well wishes for Thanksgiving, it dawned on me that while, I seemingly was more connected to the world, I was less connected to those who impact me most. Furthermore, I realized and actually came to grips that some of my connectivity was simply fake, I was no more than psuedo-connected to the vast majority of people with whom I was connecting, chatting, texting, emailing!  I accepted the fact that I knew no more about my cyber world than what it’s citizens wanted me to know. It was jolting to think that I interact with people on the daily whose voices I would never recognize, not to mention, whose faces I would not,  either; I share my views and opinions just like I am doing now with complete strangers more than I do my closest friends and family members. All this connectivity brought to us courtesy Myspace, Google, Gmail, Starbuck’s , etc., has silenced us, often has  kept us so busy trying to connect that we have not connected with those closest to us, our loved ones. Just like getting a card in the mail, or jotting down a note to a friend, or sending a letter to someone you love, plain old fashioned face to face communicating is becoming rarer and rarer as we become more and more intrigued, entranced, even, swallowed up by our cyberworlds. So on Thanksgiving, I put my cyberworld to the side for a few hours and gave thanks for being able to give and receive an actual hug, to laugh with my neighborhood, to sit down to dinner with friends and talk, to really connect with those who are important to me, the plain old fashioned face to face way, no waiting for a signal, no logging on, no dialing up, no texting, no transmission errors, no avatars. I could be experienced by the living, the breathing, the actual and moreover,  I could not be silenced, I was present and loving it, thanks to God and thanks to Ryan!

What is J-Slash a.k.a The Notorious B.U.M.!

You might recall back in 1996, the movie “Rebound: The Legend of Earl ‘The Goat’ Manigault”, a feature real life movie about a basketball street legend. “The Goat’s” signature move was the double dunk, in which he would catch it with his left hand, switch the ball to his right hand, bring it back around and jam it through again… all in one leap… without hanging on the rim to pull the stunt off. When the Lakers held Kareem Abdul-Jabar’s number retiring ceremony the Forum, they ask him who was the greatest player he ever played with or against, he answered, “that would have had to have been ‘The Goat’. Get it? ‘The Goat” was bad (in the good sense)!! But what had happened was, along the way, he kinda gets mixed up with the wrong crowd and sort of gets mixed up with the wrong drugs and anyway,  you know where I’m going with this.  The fact is this post has nothing whatsoever to do with ‘The Goat’ or even basketball at all, but the unfortunate truth that most of us can tell of the neighborhood guy that had ‘the goods’ and could have made it, but didn’t.

The story of J-Slash The Notorious B.U.M. is no different.  Legend has it (as told by J-Slash, that is) that once upon a time Houston m.c. Slim Thug attempted to bring him into the studio to and record him.  Now, several years later after stints in jail and living on the streets, the Notorious bum can still be found spitting verses at the local Wendy’s drive thru…. Ladies and Gentlemen, I introduce to you Jay-Slash The Notorious B.U.M.

What is Mo Profit!

I don’t care if I ever see another freakin hi fi super glossy over the top extra expensive music video again.   These days I’m totally into the low budget stuff.   Just give me a great performance, some colors and a little imagination. So when my girl Dominque from Milwaukee sent me this video of her homeboy Mo Profit, I’m like, I’m all over this.  Dude can spit too, and the prelude to the video has my man Pharrell co-signing.

What is Tada!

Laying back, daydreaming, a few days ago, I suddenly found myself on warm sand wearing dark shades  with the sound of the surf roaring, nearby.  As I think about it, I must have been on some resort in the Bahamas.  Suddenly, a dark sun kissed waitress appeared in a g-string and a strip of sea shells covering her top part asking if I’d like to order a drink. Definitly trying to capture the moment, I ask for “something exotic with a taste that “popped”, something sweet and colorful, but still wtih an edge or a kick to it.”  She said that she recommended the Tada.  That’s when I realized that I had fallen asleep as I woke up and noticed “No One Else”, the new video from Tada’s new I’m That Girl” album playing.

"I'm That Girl" The New Album

I happened to be in the studio in L.A. over the weekend tightening up a few things and Tada dropped by, while she was in the states making rounds.  Hailing from Nassau, Bahamas, she has a promising future.  Ya’ll know how I get when I hear fresh and tasty new stuff and she just happened to have some copies of her new c.d.  for which I gave her mad props, after being able to listen to and thouroughly enjoying every cut.  The project has some nice feature artist as well and some of my favorites were “Go” featuring Chello the Black Pearl, the title cut “I’m that Girl” featuring Overlord and the “No One Else” joint.  The album is available on ITunes and at C.D.Baby as well.  Show Tada some love (as well as do yourself a favor) and check it out, you know I’ve never steered you wrong.  Oh yeah, and if anyone runs into her before I see her again, tell her that “World Famous” is looking for her.  I’d love to work with ya, Tada!!!!!
